To finish off we can now take a look at the most eastern parts of First Avenue and Adit C.
These areas were also part of the RAF
Stores during WWII. In the 1960's they were incorporated into the RSG. From
the 1980's they were outside the area used for the RGHQ.
There is no evidence of the RAF Stores now, so what we see are the remains of
the RSG.
It is easier to understand this area by following the plans on pages 20-21 of
Drakelow Unearthed - Revised Edition (Pages 16-17
of the original version).

Looking east along First Avenue. The wall separating off the 1980's RGHQ is just behind us. |
At the end of the main passage a single doorway leads to a much smaller passage. At its entrance the sign refers to some rather time consuming emergency proceedures for fire fighting in the 60's and 70's era. |
Passing through the doorway we continue down the smaller passage. At the end it takes a 90 deg turn to the left. |
Turn to the left to look up an incline towards Adit D. Click HERE to see work we had to do to the outside of Adit D. |
|
Having walked back to the 90 deg bend we are now looking back towards the narrow doorway and First Avenue. (i.e. looking west) |
Back through the doorway into First Avenue. On your left the bay partly occupied by the reserve water tank. Ahead the wall that separates the RGHQ area. |
If you were to walk down the gallery to your left in the previous photo you would then come to this small cross passage on your right. Here we are looking west right across to where a wall divides off the RGHQ area. |
Looking back (east)along the same passage. |
A further passage Runs parallel to the prevoius one. Here looking east. At the end is the side of the reserve water tank. |
The same passage now looking west towards the wall separating the RGHQ area. The side of the reserve water tank is behind us. |
At this point we have completed our tour of the site. We have covered every area. In the future we may add further detailed shots of particular areas and features. It was not possible to see all of the areas on the real tours, so hopefully this will make up for that whilst also allowing you to see what it was like before it was devastated during scrap removal and the arrival of airsoft. | |
