I was fortunate to
visit this Midlands site in February 1999. Since then the owners have
requested that I do not publicise
its existence or location. Most of the equipment that I saw has since
been removed. Although no longer on the Secret list it still
has a high security rating and is in use today, in a much reduced
role. It has two levels plus a third for ventilation. It is
approximately 100 feet below
the surface. I have to confess that I did not do a good job of recording
the details at the time,
expecting to have a further visit and find out more details in due
course. Unfortunately I never managed to arrange a further visit
and it is now almost impossible to arrange visits here.
Those of you in the know will be able to guess where it is, those
of you who don't know aren't supposed to !

a ventilation shaft. At the top of the shaft a huge concrete block,
weighing several tons, would slide into place to block the shaft
to protect against blast and fallout. Apparently this had to be
tested from time to time which was a very hair raising experience
for the operator. The mechanism would have to be tested to a point
just before the block fell into place. If the operator was too
slow and the block actually dropped into it's position there was
only one way to remove it : demolish the roof of the building
above and hire a crane to lift it out again. A very expensive
mistake to make !
